On Monday I received a call that FC Coventry could not play this week. One of their players had died. His name was Phil Allen. My mind played tricks with me, not 'Dilch' he was too young to leave us. The reality hit home when the Telegraph dropped through the door with his face on the front page. It was 'Dilch.'
For those of you who may have seen his picture in the Telegraph 'Dilch' played with us from day one of the futsal league; first as Pizza Paradise, and then the same group of friends changed their name to FC Coventry.
We met by accident when I was asked to organise some football by the Grange & Crowland Community Centre. 'Dilch' organised some of his friends to play some older ex GTFC YT's at Western School. For my part I brought along a ball that didn't bounce and a strange set of rules sent to me by a Brazilian coach. Four weeks later we were still playing, the group had doubled in size, but we had lost our booking space.
We went to play at the Second Avenue Resource Centre, challenged by friendly locals, we were on their patch, and the Grimsby Futsal League was created. Thanks to 'Dilch' and his freinds accepting the challenge of a new game, even the FA followed; they have had four National Futsal Championships whilst Grimsby has grown to 40 teams in 4 leagues.
Thanks Phil
