Grimsby Futsal Cup Final 2011

Newton Heath 6 Franklin College 5

Franklin College had a FC Grimsby starting line up of Peter Schoefield, Sam Brooks, Mathew Horner, Mathew Payne and Gavin Broughton in goal.  Their opening play was dynamic, the ball was moving continuously, players moved off the ball, with added clinical finishing, the complete package.  Inside five minutes they had taken a 2-0 lead.  Newton was chasing shadows.

Ten minutes on and two cheap goals had given Newton’s a life line, all be it a piece of rope with no buoy attached.

Franklin just kept up the pace and by half time the two goal lead was restored.

Half time gave Newton a break from pressure; it also gave them a chance to discuss statics.

From the restart Franklin went 5-2, no way back for Newton Heath we thought.

Amazingly Newton did not crash; they started pressing Franklin in their own half, a tactic Franklin did not respond tactically. The game moved to 5-3, 5-4 with 4 minutes left, Franklin was on the back foot but with the fire power to get another gaol.  Remarkably, through grit, determination and skill of their own, Newton Heath equalised.

Believing anything was possible Newton attacked yet again, a volley through a crowd of defenders, GOAL!

Five seconds later the game was over.  Newton Heath had climbed Everest in flip flops.

Newton Heath manager Danny Rodger summed the game up perfectly when he said ‘I can’t believe we won!’

Great to see a good crowd witness the drama.
