FPL North match reports weekend 16th/17th February 2008.

Leeds Barca 4 FC Grimsby 3

The result illustrates the closeness of an excellent match, both teams a credit to futsal. Patient build up, both teams stringing together passing phases when you doubted
the opposition would ever get another touch; passing moves probing well organised defences, testing and stretching the resilience of the opposition.

For Grimsby the first half was a tale of 2 unforced errors Grimsby being capitalised on by Leeds; and a tough battle to rescue those mistakes. Half time - 2-2. A fair reflection on a cat and mouse affair that was not short of goal mouth action.

For long period Grimsby dominated the second half and were worth the goal that gave them a 3-2 lead and a platform to move forward. Leeds although pressed back had been dangerous on the break and so it proved, with 5 minute to go they broke out and 3-3.

Less than a minute on the clock, a time out called. Leeds has a corner. Grimsby decide to blitz the Leeds player receiving the ball knowing they then have 30 seconds at best to get off a shot on the Leeds gaol. The second half of the plan never materialised, the ball had rocketed into the back of the Grimsby net, 4-3.
Two teams locked in combat for 40 minutes, only 11 fouls, tough on the managers – great for the spectators.

Grimsby will take plenty of pluses from this game, several 'starter names' was missing, which gave other players the opportunity to stand up and be counted; which they did exceptionally well.  Kirk Russell has to be mentioned, he was so influencial we just had to keep him on; which at futsal is the equalivent of flogging a race horse.  Three other players got to play on a large indoor court, which is a totally different game and exprerience to futsal on astro.  Superb team performance only lacking good fortune or a killer touch in front of goal.

It is a rarity in futsal that the best team loses, This was one of those occassions.
