This first of an annual event here at Franklin College was a huge success with a total of eight teams participating Schools included the likes of Matthew Humberstone, Healing, St Marys, Whitgift, Tollbar, Immingham, and Havelock. All schools enjoyed the tournament with a very high standard of football being played throughout. Each team displayed excellent sportsmanship which added to the day both from staff and students.

The eight teams were separated into two leagues of four for the first stage of the tournament. Each team played a total of six games in a round robin format. Both leagues were very competitive with the top two spots to progress on to the semi finals keenly contested.

From the group stages of the draw Tollbar A and B would meet each other in the first semi final were Tollbar A came out winners 2-0. The second semi final was between Havelock and Immingham were Havelock progressed 3-1 to set up a final with Tollbar A. The Referee Martin Lyons got the game under way and a tense first half ended 0-0 with both sides having chances to score. Early on in the Second half Havelock took the lead with great individual play from the Havelock player Lewis Smith the same player doubled the lead direct from the corner to gave what looked to be the winning goal 3 mins from time. Tollbar did raise their game but excellent saves from the Havelock keeper kept the score at 2-0 and that’s how it ended. So Havelock Academy became the first recipients of the Franklin College Futsal Trophy and just to say a huge thank you to all the schools who took part and all the Franklin College students who made the day a great success .

Futsal is a form of 5 a side football which originated in Brazil and is played around the world. It is recognised as being the best type of training for all other forms of football and, after many years, it is now taking off in the UK in a big way. So Franklin College is looking to get in on the act by setting up this annual tournament for year 10 secondary school students.
