After a frustrating day watching Grimsby Town slip to yet another home defeat on Saturday BBS Couriers managers Rob Phillips and Danny North were looking forward to the Sunday League Division 6 meeting with ITP Jewellery.

After beating ITP earlier in the season in their first meeting BBS were looking for a repeat result as they travelled to King George playing fields.

BBS started very sharply and put a lot of very early pressure on the ITP defence, if it wasn’t for a very good in form ITP goal keeper and some poor finishing BBS would have scored a few very early goals. But it was not until the 35min when the deadlock was finally broken by a superb run and finish by Marco Ellis breaking from mid field and finishing with a very well placed strike into the bottom corner. The score remained 1-0 going into the break with BBS continuing to press the ITP goal.

The second half pretty much picked up where the first left off but ITP did manage to up their game and started to put some good passes and movements together. But BBS increased their lead when Jay Hockney scored after some very good movement from striking partner Owen Stamp. The game at this point started to get a bit more physical with ITP trying to put BBS off their passing game with a few heavy-handed tackles. BBS were unfazed by the ITP tactics and scored a third with previous provider Owen Stamp scoring after some very neat passing.

The most controversial goal I have ever seen came when the ITP linesman flagged Gary Peters offside quite correctly but it was Jay Hockney breaking from midfield that found the forward pass and rounded a protesting ITP defence and keeper to slot into an open goal.

The ruling is that if a player who is offside plays no part in the attack or does not make an attempt to play the ball then he’s not active which was the case here. As a protest, the ITP linesman threw the flag on the ground and vacated the pitch leaving the game with no home linesman for the last 20 minutes. This spoiled an otherwise good game.

The game finished 4-0 for BBS who recorded their 3rd straight clean sheet and maintained their top of the league position.
