With
the news of yet another league looking for new teams we ask whether
weekend 11-a-side football at grassroots level is on the decline?
The Worcester and District League is one of many
amateur leagues dealing with a reduction in teams due to a change in
people's working patterns, costs and other commitments. They
are hoping to attract more teams to their Saturday division next season
with the introduction of earlier kick-off times and increased
sponsorship.
League secretary Graham Russell said: “One piece of
advice we took on board was a Football Association suggestion of
earlier kick-offs and this has proved popular.
“Sponsors we are talking to have a wish to make Saturday football inexpensive — a sure incentive in these times of recession.
“We have enquiries from sides who asked last season
and want to join next season. Inevitably, as with all grassroots
football, some clubs will fold or move elsewhere.
“We hope, with the assistance of our potential
sponsors, to retain all this season’s teams and make the league
attractive enough for others to join.”
