Futsal Cup of Nations - One long weekend of Futsal. 22nd-25th June- 2009
Written by Gavin Sartain
Wednesday, 01 July 2009
I was recently lucky enough to be asked by the FA to travel
to Lagoa in the Algarve,
Portugal.
This was to referee at the Women's Futsal Cup of Nations, which involved Teams
from around the world including Brazil
(pro's), Spain
(pro's), Portugal
(Pro's), Russia,
Japan
and Iran
(National team). The tournament was of a high international standard and was a
successful, well organised event and was assured it would be an eye opener.
Myself and
my two colleagues from the National list met with the other officials from Portugal, Iran, Japan, and Chile. This was
somewhat difficult to begin with because of the language barrier but with time
we got round that. We refereed with our own colleagues and other nationalities,
so not only where you presented with two foreign speaking teams, but also a
foreign colleague as well, a challenge for any individual taking on this role
of referee this brought out other communication skills that enhanced your ability
to referee well. Body language, signalling, whistle tone, extra eye to eye
contact with referee's and correct and efficient application of FUTSAL law.
This was done in such a way that there was minimal confusion among the players,
coaches and spectators who all just want to play or watch Futsal played at its
best.
Adding to this, the local and
national press where very interested in the tournament and had a high presence
around the venues, recording the games on camera, sending them out live on internet,
interviewing players and coaches and highlights for their national news
channel.
The venues where all seated arenas which where
full to capacity to watch these games. The atmosphere with the supporters'
noise and energy added to the games and was a great experience to witness such
enthusiasm for the game.
The
Brazilian met the Portuguese in the final with Brazil winning 4-2 adding another
Cup of Nations to the merit list. The game was watched on by a packed arena and
was a great spectacle. These two teams would give any of our men's teams a
lesson or two. Highly skilful and tactically aware.
The tournament was played in a very competitive spirit but everyone
was very friendly. With out doubt one of the best experiences I have had
refereeing the game so far.
Any more interest can
be fulfilled by visiting the website below.
Nothing I can write can describe the emotions this game
threw at me. On face value 20 goals describes
a game in which neither team had a goal keeper or knew how to defend. This was not the scenario; both teams knew
how to defend and had excellent keepers.
Sheffield sat Grimsby back in the opening 5 minutes, only to
be undone by a Peter Herriman wonder goal - when he received the ball on the
edge of the Sheffield area he was marked, in a movement that should be on ‘you
tube' he rolled the ball over his opponents out stretched legs - changed the
ball to his opposite foot in the same motion - curling the ball into the
keepers net whilst sending him wrong way in the process. You expect such things at Old Trafford, but
not from Grimsby Futsal.
The game from that moment to half time mirrored the previous
Leeds game, 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4, 4-5. Why can't we hold a
lead for 2 minutes? I (the team) have to
rectify this problem.
2 goal debutant Shane Garvey
3 minutes remaining and 10-7 left I called a time out; ‘keep
the ball,' watch the clock,' run the clock down.' During the same time out Sheffield, with
nothing to lose, withdraw their keeper, to play an outfielder as a ‘flyer'
keeper. A tactic that historically we have
found hard to counter, first attack they score, 1 minute later it's 10-9, Sheffield
are calling all the shoots, 30 seconds left 10-10.
As though written for a story book there was one last twist;
Grimsby is awarded a penalty with 8 seconds remaining on the clock. Danny Durrosimo, the player fouled, stepped up
to the plate. What odds Danny from 6
meters against a non specialist keeper (95-1)?
The ball hits the keeper and rolls wide.
A draw was a fair result in a game we had won and could have
lost. What drama; when asked to sign the
team sheet my hand was shaking.
Every player was brilliant, as a group they set a new
standard for Grimsby Futsal. This game
was fast, it was intense, it demanded players with football brains and technique
to match, every player was up to task.
The pleasing thing for me as manager is that all the players are aware
that the team has potential to improve, we need to add set plays at corners and
free kicks, we need to stop conceding goals from wide areas, we need a team
tactic to counter the ‘flier GK'.
Danny Durrosimo scored 3, Shane Garvey 2, Paul Herriman 1, Daniel
Hornigold 2, and Mathew Payne 2. All 10
goals had a quality stamp on them; Shane Garvey should probably be credited
with an extra point for an ‘unstoppable' gaol line clearance.
Grimsby are competitive with all the FA North opposition,
the squad is loaded with potential, watch this space.

The
Grimsby Futsal League saw one of the best games on Tuesday 23rd June
as Young's who are at present top of the Monday League travelled to Kent Street
to play top of the Tuesday Kent Street League "Kent Street".
Young's have traditionally not played well on Kent Street due to its size but
this game was the exception. Kent Street took an early lead with some good
play, Young's equalised shortly after which sparked a good spell adding two
more to the tally. Kent Street responded well pegging the score back level to
3-3. Young's then added a fourth, which saw something that is very rare in
Futsal Kent Street levelled straight from the kick off with a beautiful finish
into the top corner. Young's then did one better going ahead from their own
kick off with Jon-jo finding the bottom corner. So in the space of about 3
minutes we saw 3 goals. With the score at 5-4 to Young's, Kent Street then
upped the tempo adding two more to take the lead 6-5. Young's also responded
well and equalised with some good passing. At the score 6-6 it looked like both
teams had run out of steam but yet again Kent Street raised their game and took
the lead with about 5 minutes of the game remaining. Young's somehow found some
energy and found an equaliser in the games dying moments to take the tie to
penalties.
As always penos are always a gamble, Young's duly dispatched all theirs with
Kent Street having one saved by keeper Dale Spalding and hitting the crossbar
on another. Congratulation goes to Young's for a very hard fought victory and
commiserations to a very adept Kent Street side. Worth mentioning, is the
superb performance from Young's player Jon-Jo scoring 5 of Young's 7 goals. RP
Tournament was mini soccer rules, but manager Mathew Bryant credits continueing success of both his senior and junior teams to the fact they play and train futsal.
In a an 8 team group they saw of teams from Morecombe, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sunderland to land the prestigious trophy.

Futsal Super Saturday Disapointment
Written by Kevin Bryant

Grimsby vs. BBS Couriors
Teams shake hands before game.
Changed the header, Super Saturday now reads Super Saturday disappointment!
The tournament was revamped from 2 groups of 3 teams to 1
group of 5 after Teesside failed to make the venue. Straightforward for the organisers
but inconsiderate for 2 of the Grimsby players who missed the first game as
their travel plans had been for a first game 11.45 kick off!
Everything started brightly for Grimsby Futsal, Herriman
scored a brilliant opener to put us 1-0 vs. Manchester. At this point we were
playing excellent futsal and looked a tournament threat. Even after Manchester went
1-1 we had the game's best chances; Manchester was always a danger from their
limited chances and we paid the price 1-2.
Next game BBS Couriers vs. Grimsby Futsal. Both teams needed to win.BBS always had the lead until a free 10 metre
shot for accumulated fouls, or should I say fouls on Josh Parry. Leigh Graves (GK) netted with time out on the
clock. 3-3
Next up Sheffield, patchy performance team never moved
fluently, the passing and movement was ‘Mundail.'3 new team faces in the squad did not help cohesion;
the team was unable to think on its feet.1-3
The last game all eyes was on Grimsby vs. Dengo. The result
would effect if Manchester or Dengo qualified.Grimsby decided on playing full game with a ‘fly' goal keeper (Peter
Herriman). It was an unmitigated
disaster. No fault of Peter, he got his part
correct. It was the outfield players. The players had watched Sheffield use a ‘flier'
in all their games; unfortunately they had watched but tactically taken nothing
on board.6 goals adrift at half time
Leigh Graves returned to gaol and proceeded to play the ‘flier' role rather
well given that he had previously been uncomfortable when asked to play the
role. Final score 2-11.
Dengo, qualified with 4 straight wins. They were the best futsal ‘newcomer' team I
have seen in last 10 years.Made up of skilful
players from a Liverpool Saturday/Sunday team; the players had the game looked tactically
as though they had played it all their lives.
BBS Couriers had a poor opening game
vs. Sheffield, unable to cope with a team that used a 'flyier' goal
keeper to great advantage. Score 1-4
Next game BBS Couriers vs. Grimsby Futsal. Both teams needed to win.BBS always had the lead until a free 10 metre
shot for accumulated fouls, or should I say fouls on Josh Parry. Leigh Graves (GK) netted with time out on the
clock. 3-3
BBS 2 Dengo 3. closest any team got to beating Dengo. BBS played some great stuff.
BBS finished on a flourish with a well deserved win 3-0 against tournament favourites Manchester. Manchester had their England international on the pitch, BBS had 'Ludow' who orchestrated the game for his team. Credit to BBS who achieved only clean sheet of day.
QUESTION:
Is Grimsby doing its self an injustice by diluting into 2 teams?
Healing's next big challenge is to do themselves and Grimsby futsal credit at the FA National Junior Finals in Sheffield, 27th June.

Grimsby Futsal League 7 Leeds Barca 9
What a frustrating game, at times brilliant in attack, more
often woeful in defence.This performance
was not on a par with the last 3 Grimsby games. Was
it that the team were playing without a win
Leeds?Certainly I had been privy to
conversations as to where in the league 3 points would take us.
Perfect start, 30 seconds 1-0.1 minute 1-1. Thus it continued to 5-5 and 16
minutes on the clock.Work hard score a
goal concede each reply a replica goal straight through the middle of the
Grimsby ‘defence.'
On 16 minutes the game turned, Leeds scored 2 without reply.Grimsby replied hitting the post, but the gap
could not be narrowed.
Leeds, in the part games I had watched, had not been as bad
as results conveyed; recent Grimsby form suggested that the game should have
been loaded in their favour; it did not work out that way.
Grimsby started the second half positively, they got their
game plan right and penned Leeds back in the early stages of the second period,
creating chances, hitting the bar, but not getting the all important goal to
stress Leeds. In fact the all important
goal was scored by Leeds (5-8).
At this point the Grimsby team could have crumbled, that they
regrouped and had another go at rescuing a losing situation showed great
character. Grimsby came close to levelling - 6-8, 7-8 with 40 seconds left on
the clock. Daniel Hornigold goal keeper
(Leigh Graves had been sacrificed as keeper for an extra outfield player)
pressing the last attack, the ball was intercepted and from their own half
Leeds scored.7-8 would have looked a closer
score, bit a loss just the same, Grimsby had to take chances with so little time
left, and the price was paid.Had their first
goal been scored early in the half I am convinced it would have given the
impetus for at least a Grimsby point?
Individually the team fell short of their recent impressive
form, several players were by their own admission were ‘below par;' it was no
surprise then that the team was struggling to get into top gear.
Players have debriefed and as a result I am positive the
team will be stronger from this set back.
Mathew Payne 3, John Frary 2, Kirk Russell 1, Daniel Durrosimo
1.
Peter Grant, Josh Parry, Luke McClellan, Leigh Graves, Daniel
Hornigold, Lee Wilkinson
